Lentera DESA UGM, in collaboration with the Center for Indonesian Policy Studies (CIPS), organized an initiative to gather stories from inspiring farmers to strengthen the MAPAN (Masa Depan Pangan/Future of Food) movement on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Focusing on millennial farmers, this event serves as concrete evidence of how field success stories can be translated into national policy recommendations.
MAPAN is a movement initiated by Center for Indonesian Policy Studies that aims to transform Indonesia’s food narrative through the principle “from real stories to evidence, from evidence to collective action.” The initiative identifies innovative agricultural practices from real farmers, analyzes them as empirical evidence, and promotes them as scalable models for public policy. MAPAN seeks to improve productivity, expand farmers’ financial access, and strengthen sustainable markets while addressing challenges such as youth urbanization and land degradation.

The activity highlighted Isnaini Baroroh, Chairperson of P4S Ardana Garden and Director of PT Petani Milenial Sleman, who has successfully empowered over 50 young farmers and Women Farmers’ Groups (KWT) through organic agribusiness and digital marketing. Also featured was Tegar Cahya Putra, Director of Kopi Menoreh Tumpang Sari, who manages a complete coffee value chain—from on-farm cultivation and post-harvest processing to sustainable educational tourism in Kulon Progo, involving over 100 local farmers.

CIPS gathered their experiences to enrich the MAPAN database. These farmers’ stories will be integrated into Lentera DESA’s blended learning content, enriching agro-complex training modules for extension workers and farmers. This collaboration creates an ecosystem where UGM’s digital platform meets CIPS’s policy analysis, producing holistic solutions for Indonesian agriculture.
Overall, this initiative supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure , SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action through environmentally friendly practices, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between academia, policy institutions, and local farming communities.
This initiative demonstrates the important role of millennial farmers as agents of change in shaping a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable agricultural future for Indonesia.
