The Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University, inaugurated Prof. Dr. Eko Setyobudi, S.Pi., M.Si. as Professor in the Field of Fisheries and Marine Biology on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Balai Senat UGM with a speech entitled “Fisheries Biology: Concepts and Applications in Fisheries Resource Management for Sustainable Development”

In his speech, Prof. Eko emphasized that sustainable fisheries resource management must be based on accurate, detailed, and continuous biological data. He highlighted the need for a robust national fisheries data management system, supported by adaptive and representative sampling methods tailored to the characteristics of each water area. He argued that universities must play a strategic role as a key player in providing national fisheries biological data, so that academic contributions can directly support public policy.
Prof. Eko also emphasized the urgency of developing a national digital data portal that is open, standardized, and easily accessible. With an integrated data system, every government policy and fisheries management policy can be formulated and implemented based on valid scientific evidence. This is believed to strengthen food security, maintain the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems, and enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia’s fisheries sector globally.

The inauguration not only marks a significant academic milestone for Prof. Eko but also reinforces the Faculty of Agriculture UGM’s commitment to advancing sustainable development through education, research, and innovation in fisheries and marine sciences. His contributions align with SDG 2: Zero Hunger by supporting sustainable fisheries to enhance food security, SDG 4: Quality Education through the advancement of scientific knowledge and human resource development in fisheries biology, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through the development of a national digital fisheries data system and evidence-based innovation, SDG 14: Life Below Water by promoting the sustainable management of aquatic resources and marine ecosystems, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by fostering collaboration among universities, government agencies, industry, and local communities to strengthen sustainable fisheries governance.
With this inauguration, the Faculty of Agriculture UGM hopes that more real contributions will emerge from the field of fisheries and marine biology, in order to support food security, maintain aquatic ecosystems, and strengthen Indonesia’s position in managing fisheries resources at the global level.
