The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, through the Department of Fisheries, organized the Local Fish Stocking Ceremony at UGM Valley Lake. This activity is a follow-up to the collaboration between the Yogyakarta Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office and UGM, serving as a tangible commitment to preserving terrestrial ecosystems and enriching aquatic biodiversity within the campus.

The event was attended by R. Hery Sulistio Hermawan, S.Pi., M.T, Head of the Yogyakarta Marine and Fisheries Office; Prof. Suadi, S.Pi., M.Agr., Sc., Ph.D, Director of Human Resources at UGM; representatives from UGM Residence; village officials from Caturtunggal; and members of the academic community of the Department of Fisheries. The ceremony was opened by Abiyyu Dzaki Hernawan, a Fisheries student and finalist of Duta Gemarikan DIY.

In his remarks, R. Hery Sulistio Hermawan emphasized that the activity was a continuation of the MoU between the Office and the Faculty of Agriculture UGM. “We hope this will increase the population of local fish in UGM Valley. This partnership is crucial in maintaining terrestrial ecosystems,” he stated.

Prof. Suadi expressed his appreciation for the initiative of the Marine and Fisheries Office. “May this activity help preserve biodiversity in UGM Valley,” he remarked. Meanwhile, Prof. Djumanto, representing the Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Fisheries, noted that a total of 7 kilograms of local fish seed were released during the ceremony to enrich the species diversity in campus waters.

The fish stocking program is not limited to UGM Valley Lake but also extends to 13 locations across Yogyakarta, with a total of approximately 97,000 fish seeds consisting of tawes, nilem, and wader. This initiative is expected to strengthen aquatic ecosystems and support the sustainability of local fish resources.

The activity aligns with the Faculty of Agriculture UGM’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
