Nadya Mangesti Wibowo (Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness 2022) was awarded Best Presenter at The 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Agricultural Socioeconomics, Agribusiness, and Rural Development (ICSASARD) 2024, under the sub-theme Inclusive Rural Development. The award was presented on October 17, 2024, at The Alana Hotel Yogyakarta. Nadya’s presentation, titled “The ‘Dadi Wong’ Philosophy: A Glimpse into Yogyakarta Farmers and Their Hopes for Regeneration”, highlighted the findings of her research.
This research was part of the Student Creativity Program – Social Humanities Research (PKM-RSH), conducted from April to August 2024. Nadya, alongside her team—Alexandros Candra Febrian (Agricultural Extension and Communication 2022), Hosana Adel Ivory (Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness 2022), and Iqbal Tafqy Aunika (History 2022)—was supervised by Dr. Najmu Tsaqib Akhda, S.P., M.A. Their study examined the challenges of farmer regeneration amidst modernization and social changes in rural Yogyakarta.
The research delves into the dadi wong philosophy within the context of farmers’ lives in Yogyakarta and their aspirations for farmer regeneration. During her presentation, Nadya highlighted how the dadi wong philosophy, as articulated in Serat Wedhatama, shapes farmers’ perspectives on agriculture as a profession.
“We sought to identify how farmers in Yogyakarta, particularly from the perspective of parents, view the farming profession. Broadly, we compared perceptions between rural and urban farmers and formulated strategies to address the declining interest in farming, especially within families,” Nadya explained.
Nadya’s joy and emotion upon receiving the Best Presenter award were evident. She shared her experience candidly, saying, “I was surprised, happy, and didn’t expect it. I felt very nervous before the presentation because this was an international seminar.” Despite her nerves, Nadya delivered a confident presentation, engaging in in-depth discussions and gaining new insights from other participants.
This achievement is not only a source of pride for Nadya and her team but also a testament to the Faculty of Agriculture UGM students’ ability to contribute to global discussions on critical issues like farmer regeneration, which is vital for the future of Indonesian agriculture. It aligns with the Faculty of Agriculture UGM’s efforts to support SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
