The Faculty of Agriculture UGM held a Preparatory Session for Bachelor’s Degree Graduation Candidates on Monday, 18 November 2024, at the Prof. Harjono Danoesastro Auditorium, attended by 140 prospective graduates. The session featured Ignatius Putra Andika, S.P., M.Sc., an alumnus of the Faculty of Agriculture class of 2011 and currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Biology, Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta. He delivered a presentation titled “Tips for Preparing Personal and Research Statements: What They Don’t Tell You.”
Putra shared insights on how to write essential documents for postgraduate studies, including strategic steps in applying for scholarships, contacting potential supervisors, and preparing for interviews. He began by outlining the main stages in the postgraduate application process, starting with identifying opportunities through scholarship programs, graduate assistantships, and researching potential supervisors.

He advised prospective students to initiate communication by sending emails that introduce themselves, describe their research interests, and highlight what they can contribute to the research team:
“They are entrepreneurs in their fields, looking for the best team members to support their research. Our job is to demonstrate that we are reliable team players.”
He also emphasized the importance of preparing personal and research statements that reflect one’s experiences, research interests, and academic capabilities. Finally, he reminded students to prepare thoroughly for interviews by reading their prospective supervisor’s work, completing assignments, and being ready for deep discussions.
To close, Putra offered practical tips: start early, keep developing your skills, and don’t be afraid to take chances. He encouraged students to believe in themselves:
“We need more representation on the international stage to show that Indonesia can compete globally. This will bring positive impact for our nation.”
The session concluded with a lively Q&A segment and was followed by a souvenir presentation and group documentation.
