The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM), continues to strengthen its international network through the initiation of a cooperation in developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) focusing on global climate change issues. On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Faperta UGM received an official visit from the delegation of Ibaraki University, Japan, represented by Prof. Makoto Tamura, Ph.D. and Masaki SEO, Ph.D. This strategic meeting discussed the potential integration of academic expertise from both institutions into a widely accessible digital learning platform to respond to the increasingly urgent climate challenges for the agricultural sector at a global level.

The MOOC is designed to serve as a knowledge bridge for students, practitioners, and the wider public in understanding climate change mitigation and adaptation. This collaboration goes beyond the exchange of academic materials, aiming to integrate cross-country research data to generate innovative solutions for sustaining food security. By leveraging online learning technologies, both institutions seek to enhance research-based climate literacy beyond conventional classroom settings.

By expanding access to high-quality education on the climate crisis, Faperta UGM plays an active role in strengthening human resource capacity to adapt to environmental changes. The curriculum will emphasize sustainable agricultural practices that reduce carbon emissions while improving farmers’ resilience and livelihoods in the face of extreme weather conditions.

This step is a concrete manifestation of Faperta UGM’s commitment to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4: Quality education, SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure, SDG 13: Climate action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals.
