On Wednesday, 4 September 2024, the Department of Soil at the Faculty of Agriculture Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM), organized a guest lecture themed “Micrometeorology Technology for Precision Agriculture and Carbon Farming.” The lecture was delivered by Prof. Cheng-I Hsieh from the Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering at National Taiwan University, held at the Prof. Harjono Danoesastro Auditorium.
During the session, Prof. Cheng-I Hsieh covered three key topics that are currently of significant interest among researchers: precision agriculture for farm management, indoor vertical farming, and carbon farming. He also highlighted the connection between smart agriculture, micrometeorology, and machine learning, which closely relates to artificial intelligence. In his presentation, he shared several case studies from Taiwan and discussed the results of his collaborative research on micrometeorology.
The guest lecture was attended by 250 students from various courses, such as precision agriculture, climate change, and soil characteristics. The students actively participated in the lecture by engaging in the discussion, with one notable question focusing on how to implement smart agriculture in Indonesia.
Moderated by Nur ‘Ainun Harlin Jennie Pulungan, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Soil, the guest lecture aimed to deepen students’ understanding of topics like precision agriculture for farm management, indoor vertical farming, carbon farming, and climate change mitigation.
“This guest lecture offers students a global perspective. With an international speaker, students not only enhance their foreign language skills but also gain insights into agricultural practices outside of Indonesia,” Ainun explained.
This guest lecture highlights Faperta UGM’s commitment to achieving SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 12: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
