The Soil Science Student Association (KMIT) of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM) commemorated its 50th anniversary (Lustrum X) with a meaningful community service initiative. As part of the celebration, KMIT UGM organized a river clean-up and ecoenzyme release in Kali Code, addressing the persistent issue of river pollution. This activity reflects the students’ concerns about environmental sustainability and their efforts to introduce eco-friendly solutions for water purification.
The Chairman of the Lustrum X Committee, Muh. Rizky (Soil Science 2022), emphasized that the event, held on Saturday, 5 October 2024, was not only about maintaining environmental cleanliness but also served as a public awareness campaign on ecoenzyme technology. The initiative aimed to educate the community on its benefits for water quality and demonstrate UGM Soil Science students’ active role in environmental conservation.
“Through this community service, KMIT UGM is introducing ecoenzyme to the public, helping them understand its positive impact on the environment. Additionally, this activity strengthens the image of our study program as an institution committed to environmental care,” Rizky stated.
The community service project, overseen by the Student Resource Development Division (PSDM), required three months of preparation. The committee carefully planned the river clean-up, along with ecoenzyme production, which involved recycling used water gallons and organic waste, combined with EM4 (Effective Microorganisms 4). The prepared ecoenzyme was then released into Kali Code in carefully measured doses to maximize its effectiveness.
The President of KMIT UGM 2024, Alvian Tegar Wiranda (Soil Science 2021), highlighted the positive reception from local residents near Kali Code. With 150 student participants from both undergraduate and postgraduate Soil Science programs, the community expressed gratitude for the river clean-up and ecoenzyme introduction, recognizing its long-term benefits.
This initiative demonstrates the UGM Faculty of Agriculture students’ dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
