2024
Faculty of Agriculture Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) recently welcomed an international student for a research internship, underscoring its commitment to global academic cooperation. Cen Caihui, a PhD student from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), Japan, is participating in a one-month research internship program at UGM’s Department of Agricultural Microbiology. This opportunity was made possible through a scholarship from the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
Caihui, affectionately known as Mia, chose UGM due to the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TUAT and UGM, which facilitated the necessary permissions for her internship. Her program began with a series of field trips as part of the Summer Course on Sustainable Tropical Agriculture 2024 (SC-STA 2024), organized by Faculty of Agriculture UGM in August 2024. Following these activities, Mia engaged in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qPCR, sequencing, and DNA transformation under the guidance of several faculty members in the Department of Agricultural Microbiology.
The Faculty of Agriculture UGM exhibited various agricultural innovations at the Agrifest 2024 event which took place at the Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT) UGM in Brebah, Sleman. This event was attended by various groups such as students, farmers, researchers, and the general public who are interested in the development of agricultural technology.
Among the innovations displayed was Malika Soybean which is a black soybean that has a high content of antioxidants, protein, and other contents. In addition, there was also an innovation in stacking buckets (ember tumpuk) that are able to process organic waste into compost and Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC). The other innovations displayed were the ViVac+ vaccine, NitriQua probiotics, IWAQ probiotics, the Apps Village extension application, insect dome decoration, and the E-Nose innovation.
