Algifari Izzan Muska, familiarly known as Algi, a 2022 cohort student of the Aquaculture Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM), successfully participated in a student exchange program at Ibaraki University, Japan, from 25 September 2025 to 21 January 2026. Over the course of four months, Algi not only acquired academic knowledge but also gained firsthand cultural experiences that enriched his global perspective.

At Ibaraki University, Algi enrolled in courses related to sustainable agriculture, soil science, and laboratory research. He also had the opportunity to serve as a research assistant in soil science projects, allowing him to be actively involved in research activities. According to him, the Japanese learning system emphasizes discussion and research-based approaches, encouraging students to think critically, ask questions, and engage intensively with lecturers and peers in research projects.

Beyond academic experiences, Algi was immersed in Japanese culture, characterized by discipline and order, from punctual public transportation to a society that values cleanliness and courtesy. He joined various campus activities with international students, explored traditional Japanese cuisine, and adapted to the autumn and winter climate. Challenges such as language barriers were successfully overcome through Japanese language classes, technological support, and the assistance of friendly local communities.

Algi emphasized that the support of the Faculty of Agriculture UGM was crucial to his success in the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) program. The faculty provided administrative and academic guidance, including the process of course conversion upon his return to Indonesia. He also encouraged fellow students to seize such opportunities, noting that exchange programs are not only about studying abroad but also about expanding international networks, honing adaptability, and building a global outlook.

Algi’s experience at Ibaraki University aligns with the commitment of the Faculty of Agriculture UGM to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
