Learning Permaculture at Bumi Langit: UGM Summer Course (SC-STA 2025) Day 3

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM), continued the Summer Course on Sustainable Tropical Agriculture 2025 (SC-STA 2025) on its third day, Wednesday, 6 August 2025, with a field visit to the Bumi Langit Institute in Imogiri, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The visit was accompanied by Faperta UGM lecturers, Dr. Prayogo Probo Asmoro, S.P., M.Si., and Andrianto Ansari, S.T.P., M.Agr., Ph.D.

In this session, participants from various countries including Singapore, Bangladesh, Gambia, and the Philippines gained first-hand learning about the concept of permaculture, a sustainable farming approach that harmonizes human activities with nature. Guided by Bumi Langit facilitator, Mrs. Ria, the group explored three main stations: Water Management, Fermentation, and Greywater Treatment. read more

Unlocking the Benefits of Duckweed: A Miracle Plant for Agriculture and Future Nutrition

The Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM), held another guest lecture titled “Current Research on Duckweed: an Aquatic Plant with Thousands of Benefits” on 22 November 2024. The event was conducted virtually via Zoom Meeting and featured two renowned speakers: Dr. Klaus-J. Appenroth from Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany, and Dr. K. Sowjanya Sree from Banaras Hindu University, India.

Prof. Ir. Irfan Dwidya Prijambada, M.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Department of Microbiology, opened the session by expressing his appreciation to the speakers. He also shared that duckweed has been utilized in UGM’s research on bioremediation of agricultural land, including studies on microbial symbiosis with duckweed roots to support its growth. read more

Celebrating Its Golden Anniversary, UGM Soil Science Student Association Conducts Community Service by Releasing Ecoenzyme in Kali Code

The Soil Science Student Association (KMIT) of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Faperta UGM) commemorated its 50th anniversary (Lustrum X) with a meaningful community service initiative. As part of the celebration, KMIT UGM organized a river clean-up and ecoenzyme release in Kali Code, addressing the persistent issue of river pollution. This activity reflects the students’ concerns about environmental sustainability and their efforts to introduce eco-friendly solutions for water purification. read more
