As a form of community service, Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology provides consultation on water quality analysis and water organism identification.
Laboratory of Genetic and Breeding
Laboratory of Fish Genetic and Breeding has conducted several researches focused on the technology development of fish breeding and genetic. Prominent commodity which continously developed consist of giant gourami (Osphronemus gouramy), sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus), rainbow fish (Poecilia reticulata), and freshwater angelfish(Pterophyllum scalare). The laboratory has several types of gourami varieties originated from Indonesia as collection, such as from Java, Mandiangin or Riam Kanan River, Jambi and Padang.
Laboratory of Aquaculture
Laboratory of Aquaculture has developed researches in technology and management for sustainable aquaculture (carrying capacity, integrated cultivation system, resirculation cultivation system, etc), with prominent commodites such as tilapia (Oreochromis sp.), giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), carp (Cyprinus carpio), catfish (Clarias sp.), and eel (Anguilla sp.). In collaboration with government research institutes, Laboratory of Aquaculture released Nilasa, superior tilapia variety obtained from crossbreeding and inividual selection. Moreover, the laboratory also developed micro-scale aquaponic technology, gradual-sheltered giant prawn cultivation with high productivity, and carrying capacity estimation methodfor aquaculture development in water reservoirs.
Laboratory of Fish Pests and Disease
The laboratory examines various aspects on fish and shrimp disease and their countermeasures. Among succesful advance of the laboratory was vibrio polyvalent vaccine for vibriosis, particularly for groupers. To date, vaccine for VNN and KHV diseases has also gradually developed through recombinant protein method.
Our laboratories also in cooperation with various parties, including the private sector and agencies, and build cooperative network with foreign universites in form of guest lecture, workshop, training, internship, researcher visit, and joint research with Nara Institute of Science and Technology (JASSO) of Japan, University of Sydney (ACIAR) of Australia, and Kasetsart University of Thailand.
Laboratory of Fishery Product Microbiology
The laboratory has conducted several researhces on microorganism isolation, analysis on bioactive metabolite, microbiological safety of fishery products, molecular study of microorganism, and applied microbiology in fisheries. Development of enzymatic technology for chitin waste processing using chitinolytic bacteria to obtain value-added products is one of the research topic conducted in this laboratory. Until recent days, the laboratory has 150 chitinolytic bacteria isolates obtained from various fishery resources, such as fermented food, fishpond sediment, wastewater, and aquatic sediments. Moreover, various chitin-degrading bacteria has been successfully identified, from the family of Bacillus sp., Serratia sp., Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter sp., Streptomyces sp., and Micromonospora sp., among which several bacteria’s chitinase coding gene have also been identified. Those isolates will furthermore developed as enzymatic chitin degrading agent to produce chitin hydrolysate products potentially applied for many purposes.
Laboratory of Fish Nutrition
Researches conducted in the laboratory are related to development of alternative fish feed through utilization or substitution of local ingredients (eg. hummingbird leaves, azolla fern, fermented cocoa bean shell, peanuts skin, fermented bran, maggot, etc), biofloc application in catfish cultivation from various carbon source, vitamin enrichment on natural feed, feeding management on natural and artificial feed to fish and shrimp, and development of microalga (Tetraselmis suesica and such) cultivation. In line with science development trends today, research has also been focused on marine yeast as single cell proteinfor fish feed and microalga development for fishery cultivation or other related products (biofuel, etc) using Spirulina and Botryococcus.
Laboratory of Fishery Products Processing
Laboratory of Fishery Products Processing is especially developing healthy fish-based food gel products without artificial flavoring, and preservatives. Other related research is the development of microalga Spirulina platensis based functional food which recently established as laboratory’s research roadmap. Several stages of this Spirulina-based functional food has been accomplished, such as invention of drying method which able to preserve macro- and micro-nutrition of the microalga, analysis on processing-induced bioactive compound changes, ingredient formulation and consumer preference test, as well as development of appropriate food vehicle.
Laboratory of Hydrobiology
Researches conducted in this laboratory are particularly related to isolation and utilization of bioactive compounds obtained from marine organisms (seaweed, avertebrates, and microorganisms). Laboratory of Hydrobiology also conduct research collaboration with overseas partners, such as The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), PEER-NSF-USAID, CRDF Global (USA), and RSDF-FF (New Zealand), in the joint research themed “Marine Biodiversity and Biodiscovery of Indonesia”.
