Exploring the World of Fisheries Through ‘Kenal Perikanan’ at the Faculty of Agriculture UGM

news Friday, 15 November 2024

The Department of Fisheries at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), hosted the “Kenal Perikanan” event to provide students with a deeper understanding of the fisheries sector. The event took place over two days, from 6-7 September 2024, in Cirebon, West Java. This year, 212 students, 30 faculty members, 12 educational staff, and 6 companions from the Aquaculture, Aquatic Resource Management, and Fisheries Product Technology study programs participated in the Kenal Perikanan 2024 event.During the event, students had the opportunity to visit several fisheries-related institutions, including the Tegalsari Fishery Port (PPP) in Tegal, the Kejawanan Cirebon National Fishery Port (PPN), PT Sambu Perkasa Mandiri, PT Pan Putera Samudra, PT Perdana Investama Mina, and the Kersa Mulya Bakti Fishery Group.

The students were introduced to various areas of fisheries, including aquaculture techniques, fish capture, and the fish processing production process. The event also featured a fellowship night, where faculty members and alumni shared their experiences, provided insights into career prospects in fisheries, and entertained participants with performances from each study program. After the event, students were tasked with writing a report summarizing each of the visited locations, which were then evaluated by their chaperones.
Eko Hardianto, S.Pi., M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., the event coordinator and a faculty member in the Department of Fisheries, stated that the goal of Kenal Perikanan is to provide students from the 2024 cohort with a comprehensive overview of activities in the fisheries sector, such as aquaculture.

“This event is expected to offer insights into aquaculture, fisheries ports, fish landing and auction sites, as well as businesses related to the fisheries and marine industries. We hope this activity will provide students with knowledge, motivation, and an understanding of the vast and complex world of fisheries and marine affairs in Indonesia, fostering future professionals and experts in marine fisheries from UGM’s Faculty of Agriculture,” explained Eko.

Through this event, the Faculty of Agriculture UGM aims to cultivate greater interest and understanding of the fisheries sector among students. The faculty is also committed to contributing to the achievement of several SDGs, including SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
